Crab, Salmon, and Bottom Fishing at Castle Cape

Castle Cape stands out as one of Alaska's landmarks of natural majestic beauty. It juts straight out of the ocean; rock spires and sheer cliffs give it the appearance of a castle. Paintings and pictures of the Cape pop up in restaurants, museums, hotels and airports around Alaska. It is awe inspiring in its appearance and will make a lifelong imprint in the minds of most who see it. It also happens to be surrounded by fish, crab and wildlife.

We have a great time at Castle Cape. It is about an hour from Chignik in the 42" Equator, or about 25 minutes with the Chris Craft. Baiting and setting crab pots is generally the first step, the area has beautiful Baradi crab and they are abundant.

The difficult decision after that is whether to fish for salmon halibut, lingcod, salmon shark or rockfish.

We can launch the kayaks and paddle through the fish and sea lions on the cape, or head for the beach and fly fish landlocked char in a lake. Beach combing on the oceans exposed beaches is always interesting. The options seem endless and decisions have to be made! The salmon fishing is best there in August, silvers, pinks and kings charge through the area. The salmon shark fishing is also best at that time as they follow the salmon. Every thing else is available all summer.

While you're out having fun we'll haul the crab pots and cook the crab. An "all you can eat" crab feed is not a problem. Anchoring by the cape or at the head of the bay to watch the wildlife, while enjoying the catch, are both great options. On day trips we like to return to Chignik as the sun is setting, providing photo opportunities and a chance to relax and take it all in. We see whales in good numbers on eighty percent of our trips to the "castle."

Castle Cape is a great day trip or overnight stay. The boat has five bunks and cooking facilities aboard, to enjoy all the area has to offer it is nice not to be too pressured to fit it all into a day. We are willing to customize the trip to fit your interests.
