Extreme Fishing: Salmon Sharks!

Salmon sharks are big, fast and look mean as hell. It is always interesting fishing for prey when you are more afraid of them than they are of you. The salmon sharks weigh 250 to 500 pounds and are formidable adversaries for an extreme angler. They are the fastest swimming sharks in the world and their closest relative is a great white. What a combo! These guys really get with it and what a thrill. When we finish an hour-long battle with one of these sharks its like bringing a "miniature" great white to the boat. As the pictures will testify to these sharks are fierce looking, fierce fightiing and quite an adventure to land.

We use eighteen feet of stainless steel cable for leader, 100-pound spectra line, marlin rods and reels and our best advice is to hang on! These sharks get with it when hooked and we're never sure who's got whom.

Honestly it is tremendous fishing, we are often able to draw the fish to the surface with whole salmon as bait and use the opportunity to photograph them and observe their behavior. They are fearless, awe-inspiring creatures. After observation we try to pick the shark you want to fight and reward it with the bait. Game on! Commonly we team up on hookups, taking turns with the harness and rod, quite a physical effort goes into playing and tiring out a shark.

Once we actually kill one of these sharks, we are required by law to utilize all of the shark's meat, resulting in home pack for the entire group. We encourage catch and release for these monsters to ensure sound practices and keep the stocks healthy. Pictures tell a thousand words when it comes to a shark battle and we will be prepared to document your battle on film or video.

The sharks are available June through August, with August being the peak opportunity. This is not a family activity. It is similar to elk hunting, the fun is in finding, seeing and chasing. The minute you squeeze the trigger, the work begins. One partner advised, "Elk hunting is not for the faint hearted," neither is shark fishing. Don't mistake, this is a great trip, safe and fun. If you would like to join us, we'd love to have you.

We encourage our clients to be reasonable about releasing these beauties after the battle. The landed, cleaned shark often results in 200-300 hundred pound of meat. The meat is similar to swordfish, with a splash of pork thrown it. It is very good eating. We cut out and cure the jaws as your extreme trophy.
