Wilderness Adventures
Beach Combing, Hiking, Berry Picking,
Kayaking, Fish Smoking, Whale Watching

We have four kayaks and can provide outstanding adventure for experienced or inexperienced guests of most any age. Just out into the Bay in front of our home is an excellent short paddle to Eagle Rock. Around the corner is Mud Bay, which is a great paddle as well. Groups of sea otters play and feed in the edges of the kelp patches and provide great entertainment as they break clam shells on their bellies to feed on.

Eagles soar regularly in the neighborhood and leave imprints in your memory. My wife and I were kayaking by Eagle Rock last year and were awestruck as a thirty-foot gray whale surfaced, looked us in the eye, and spouted about fifty yards to twenty yards away from us. We'll remember it for the rest of our lives.

Clam digging in Chignik is different than most places in the world. We have to decide on how hard we want to dig, what kind we want to eat, and how far we want to go. Razors require the most effort in digging, however we like them best. Butter Clams fried in the half shell are hard to beat, especially when they are four inch clean white beauties, and steamers are so easy to get and taste so good! Decisions are tough to make in Chignik. We normally launch the 18' Lund, boat ride to a favorite clam spot and enjoy the tide, digging what we need for fine dinner fare.

Fish smoking, pickling and canning is often an adventure of its own. We have many recipes and techniques that have produced outstanding results that we are happy to share with our friends and families in the wintertime. Pursuit of perfection often leads to subtle "tweaking" of the recipes and methods to chase the ultimate flavor or taste. You are welcome to join us in this pursuit and customize your catch.

We employ a similar approach to our jam and jelly making as well. The adventure starts with the actual trips to the berry patches. Salmonberries are prized by most, so for "untouched" picking we often take the small boat to secret spots, close by in local bays, and make as much noise as we can allert the bears that we've come for our share. Nice buckets of berries result in beautiful jams, cordials, syrups and more as we process the berries into delicacies of our liking. Fireweed is a pretty, local wildflower that grows aboundantly in Chignik. The pedals are used to make a jelly as good as any we've ever had, and its color is spectacular. There are other species of berries and goodies in Chignik and if you and your family would like to join us we'll share recipes, secrets and fun with you in completing your home pack.

Family fun has been our goal since we built in Chignik; the priority in our lives has been sharing adventure, knowledge and learning about Alaska with your family. We would enjoy sharing the beauty and excitement of Alaska with our families as well. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone having fun if they should tire from fishing more rapidly than others.

Take your pick; we've got lots to do. Families are welcome at our place, to see and enjoy all there is, and it is not limited to fishing. Kayaking in the Bay and watching eagles soar, not bad!

Hiking out to Eagle Rock and stepping your foot into a bear track, climbing atop the land marks to breathtaking views across into Mud Bay and out to the end of the horizon on the ocean. There are fun, spectacular things to do and places to go right from Chignik Bay Village.

Mountain Outfitters

We can guide you on local hikes, take your family salmonberry picking and teach them to make jellies and jams from our local berries and flowers. We can help you customize your home pack by smoking and canning some of your catch.

There is beachcombing in Chignik Bay that leads to fossil beds and huge fossilized nautilus castings, as well as other interesting rocks and geological formations. Clam digging is an excellent low tide affair and the spoils are fresh fried razor or butter clams. Tide pool explorations often keep our younger guests occupied all day.
